Michigan Union Set to Sue Its Own Members Over Dues
I know Warner usually works the union beat, but I couldn’t resist this story. One of the big teachers’ unions in Michigan, where “right to work” just became the law of the land, is ready to sue its members if they try to sneak out of paying every dime of their dues before they leave the union (via The Lonely Conservative).
The president of Michigan’s largest union is instructing officials to prepare to sue its own members, according to a leaked memo issued after the state adopted right-to-work laws in December.
Steven Cook, president of the Michigan Education Association, circulated an email to local unions officials and staff instructing them to monitor revenue streams in light of the right-to-work laws, which are set to go into effect on March 27, 2013. The law allows workers to opt out of union membership unless they have an existing contract with their employer.
“We will use any legal means at our disposal to collect the dues owed under signed membership forms from any members who withhold dues prior to terminating their membership in August,” Cook wrote.
The union is right to be afraid. The article later says the two largest teachers’ unions in Wisconsin had to merge after their state passed a right-to-work law because their members left them in droves. The MEA knows it’s about to see an outflow of members like a sinking ship sees an outflow of people into the lifeboats and its leaders, who draw lavish salaries and pensions, are about to lose their meal tickets.
Couldn’t you just cry?
