UPDATE: Poll added at bottom of post!
Back in 2009 some prominent bloggers tried painting me into a corner as being a Ron Paul fanatic. More recently, however, many Ron Paul fans try claiming I’m siding with the establishment against him. In all honesty, neither of the two charges are correct.
In fact, I’ve stepped back and forth across the line of liking/not liking Ron Paul for several years now. As a disclaimer, I voted for Ron Paul in the primary back in 2008. I then voted for Bob Barr in the general election. Let it be noted, though, that I voted in Illinois and did not for a second believe that if I had cast a vote for John McCain that Barack Obama might have lost Illinois, so my vote was more a protest vote at the time.
Since then I’ve backed away from Ron Paul over three key concerns.
- Ron Paul’s more hardcore supporters
- Ron Paul’s opinion of the middle east
- Ron Paul’s squishy stance on border security and illegal immigration
Let’s walk through them.
Ron Paul’s Hardcore Supporters
For the record I have some VERY close friends who strongly support Ron Paul. These friends are coherent, logical and respectful of differing views. Unfortunately, there is a crowd out there that is downright nasty to anyone who does not see the world exactly as they do.
In fact, a core group of Ron Paul supporters leave their messaging style to down right ridicule and insults.
Look, I’m open to dialog about any of the candidates, but not with someone who is just going to fill up my inbox with “scum like you will ruin the world” type of nonsense. And that is the type of stuff I get almost EVERY time I write something that doesn’t put Ron Paul on a golden alter of compliments and positive reporting.
Which is exactly why I often find myself ignoring a lot of Ron Paul news with regards to the Campaign Trail. It’s not because I’m trying to block out any significant news on Ron Paul, it’s that I just don’t generally want the headache of dealing with the web trolls that often follow Paul content.
So, to be honest, a lot of Ron Paul’s hardcore fans are responsible for turning me off of Ron Paul.
Ron Paul’s Opinion of the Middle East
Up until today I’ve found Paul’s take on the middle east downright repulsive. That said, I found myself in an interesting conversation (with my boss) that lead to some thoughts I hadn’t previously considered.
Specifically, the idea that Israel should be left alone to deal with Iran. Now, I know for a lot of “conservatives” this is hard to accept. Many of us (myself included) consider Israel a friend and want to be there to back them up. But I have to wonder, at this point, would we really go in and truly back them up in a war against Iran?
I mean, at this point I just don’t see that happening. In fact, it can be argued that Israel is more than capable of dealing with Iran and world politics is more a hindrance than a help.
I’m not suggesting I fully embrace this, but with all of our problems here at home I wonder… where will we draw the line on foreign wars and affairs? I do recall a Federal responsibility to protect our foreign borders against invasion, but we spend far more time, money and energy protecting borders of other nations over our own.
Which leads me to my final concern…
Border Security & Illegal Immigration
Much has been said about Ron Paul’s stance on border security and illegal immigration. Much that has been said leaves room for concern. But, after a careful look at Paul’s own campaign website, I have to say I’m not really that concerned. In fact, Paul’s stance on border security looks pretty darn solid!
So, in essence, I’m trying to figure out whether or not I should really be that concerned. I mean, there are far bigger concerns with Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Even Michele Bachmann voted for the Patriot Act and I have a big problem with that.
I’m in no way endorsing Ron Paul here, but I do want to provoke some deeper thinking into the matter for my fellow tea partiers who might share the same concerns I have. Because, to be honest, the 95% that Ron Paul has spot on is REALLY spot on.
Who else is seriously addressing the need to remove entire departments? Who else is seriously looking at taking about overwhelming power held by the Fed? Who else is serious about dismantling unsustainable power structures in Washington and returning power to the states?
I’m asking these questions with a very serious intent to find out. What other candidate is going to bring about serious change? Heck, while most of these candidates tinker around with talking points and flashy videos, they’ve got NOTHING new to say. Or at least, none of them are saying anything previous candidates haven’t already said.
Ron Paul is the only candidate with something new to say. Again… I’m not coming out with an endorsement here. I’m just asking that we all step out of what the traditional national narrative is for a minute and take a second look here.
And I leave you with this video from the Ron Paul campaign.
Let the comment war begin!

Hi, I never heard of the Libertarian party or Ron Paul until very recently. I’m a Republican that voted for McCain in 2008. So far, I’ve only been to one Ron Paul meeting and while I admit that it was different from the usual Republican dinners in my district,– my husband and I were way over-dressed — the group couldn’t have been nicer. My husband and I drove home feeling good about the experience and excited about the upcoming primaries and the election.
Before you judge the 2012 Ron Paul crowd, consider some of the new blood coming on board . My husband and I are retirees, who couldn’t be forced to be rude, and that also have time and resources to invest. We have fund raising experience and contacts in our community. Ending the senseless wars is the deal breaker for us. I think there might be more diversity in the crowd Ron Paul attracts this time around than what you expect.
I do not know you, but you seem very bright, articulate and like someone any politician would be proud to have on his or her side.
Thanks for hearing me out.
P.S. I hope you endorse Ron Paul.
If it was a world in which my only concern was domestic issues I MIGHT consider Mr. Paul. I served 28 years in Special Forces and know the world’s America haters very well. You might say I’ve assisted many in their search for virgins. Mr. Paul does not appear to understand the threat from radical Islamist terrorist in other lands who wish to destroy us and our way of life, nor the threat right here at home from Muslim groups. He has no business being the Commander in Chief and will not get my vote. Most of my military friends will not vote for him either.
People, we need to get together. You wanted change but did not specify. You want a savior but do not look at the truth that savior is bringing. If you wander in chaos then there shall be only chaos. This country is called the UNITED states of America. Are we REALLY united any longer? Research the people you choose to put into office. Be certain that our government is not divided in congress, and the administration. Debate is good, “stonewalling” means that nothing moves forward. 2012 may be our last chance to save the America most of us grew up in.
“What you mean ‘we’, paleface?”
I think it is possible Ron Paul understands the threat very well, and he might understand that stopping us from buying oil from the Muslim nations and developing our own and even selling some of ours to our allies might be a good thing,,,
I think putting our forces all over the globe and allowing the Muslim influence to move into our homes is a bigger problem,
The question we should be asking is: “Are the views and positions of our candidates aligned with the U.S. Constitution?” I believe that Ron Paul’s are and therefore they are not unusual or odd. They are spot on.
I can’t thank you enough for this balanced post. As someone simply wanting to discuss Ron Paul with an open mind on other sites, I have been accused of being a “Paulistine” (among other derogatory terms). It seems many of Paul’s supporters have completely turned off whole segments of the blogging world, to the point where they won’t even consider his viewpoints. Too bad, and their loss. I guess they forget that he can’t be held accountable for the actions of a few offensive idiots that support him.
I am not 100% on-board with all of Ron Paul’s ideas, but what he says makes a LOT of sense. More every day, actually.
If freedom is seen as radical, I will join our forefathers. We have been conditioned to the two party progressive way of thinking. Doctor Paul is correct that this country is headed the way of Rome! We need to press the reset button, and Restore the Republic. Our forefathers were seen as radicals in their time. If that is what others think so be it.

RE: RP’s stance on illegal immigration, I would suggest that you check out Roy’s blog from NUMBERSUSA; probably the #1 grassroots anti-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION site around.
http://www.numbersusa.com/content/nusablog/beckr/may-4-2011/ron-paul-wrote-book-show-how-he-would-handle-issues-president-we-didnt-mak
I’ve long been a supporter of both NumbersUSA (hundreds of faxes) and Ron Paul; thus, Roy’s F rating caused no little constirnation. Yet, for the most part, I think it’s necessary to understand -why- Ron Paul’s views are what they are, and why Roy disagrees. Ron Paul’s first criterion is the Constitution. Roy finds it ‘abysmal’ that Ron Paul has not supported eVerify; RP’s position is that the Constitution does not authorize the federal government to require employers to act (under penalty for non-compliance) to act as immigration agents. As much as I would like to see illegals prevented from obtaining employment, I have to concede that adherence to the Consitution is of even greater importance. RP acknowledging that it would be nearly impossible to deport all the illegals is not the same thing as approving of the status quo. RP is opposed to birthrught citizenship and to providing -any- social benefits to anyone not in the country legally. As well-meaning as Roy is, and I mean that sincerely, he is among many that see attempting to solve a problem through legislation is more important than adhering to the Constitution. I disagree; surely there must be Constitutional means through which this can be achieved — remember, we got to this point by ignoring the Constitution in the first place!
We must put all of our stock in a winner and RP simply is not the one!
I agree with much of his thoughts but the ones I disagree with are important and a killer of my support for him.
Four more years of BHO are out of the question and our continued support of RP will almost guarantee his reelection. I do hope the 47 % come to their senses before the election. After the primary it will be imperative that we all get completely behind one candidate and carry him/her past the finish line.
It sounds as though you love the principle of choosing the lesser of two evils. I would rather not participate and allow the cards to fall where they lay than to be a part of the situation both parties have created with their interventionist policies. Have any of Dr Paul’s principles been compromised or has he been shown to be a hypocrite in his ideals? Can any of the other candidates boast that? Perry created almost as many govt jobs between 07-10 as Texas lost in that time period. Romney? Come on! Are the republicans looking for the next McCain or Dole?
I support Ron Paul on so many issues except when he said that Iran should have the right to have nuclear weapons. I believe that it is naive of Dr. Paul to think that Iran would not use these weapons against Israel first and ultimately against America. That being said, in the end, I don’t think the President has the ability to implement such a position. At this point, I do not see anyone that could move America in the directions our founders envisioned, and I trust him more than any politician out there.
I do not feel he would make a good president because of some of his views (e.g. terrorist in American courts, allowing nuclear proliferation, etc.) but he seems passionate and honest in his views. His views on the Fed are spot on! He would be an excellent choice for the Treasury Secretary position that Timothy Geithner now holds in a new conservative government!
If the Tea Party “leadership” start pushing ideas like leaving Israel, GB or Australia by themselves in a future war, then the Tea Party will splinter and be no more. This view of the world is exactly the same as the “Progressives” and so are many of the “Progressive” tactics the same as the radical arm of Paul’s people. I was on Lincoln Blvd in Miami recently and heard a group of “Progressive” liberals laughing about how they are pretending to be Ron Paul supporters to “cause caos within the Tea Party” and “to attack folks in the GOP too”. I spent the last 7 years and 2 Iraq deployments of my life in the Service. I fought for this country and the ideals of countries like Israel twice in horrible conditions. I feel that a lot of these “Ron Paul supporters” are NOT conservatives or liberitarians; rather they are “Progressives” tring to erode the good name of the Tea Party. Tea Party leaders need to send a clear message that the Ron Paul & Progressive goals of avoiding most all foriegn wars or military aid (when justified) is NOT the ideals of the Tea Party. The Progressive’s goal is to get Tea Party folks like me to leave the Tea Party….they just may succeed if this becomes a core platform. SAD
How many of these hard core Ron Paul people are actually “Progressives” pretending to support Ron Paul to erode the Tea Party and core Conservative/Libritarian base?
I would need to hear much more detail about what Paul would actually do regarding foreign affairs (in particular the Middle East) and the immigration/border debacles.
On everything else, he’s my candidate.
Margaret M.
if he makes the nomination, he gets my vote. I like Herman Cain but was a delegate for Ron Paul in 08 in WA state and witnessed what the R party did to him. The dems did not betray Paul. The R’s did.
I don’t mind some of Paul’s Libertarian ideas on domestic policy — in fact, I like them — but his foreign policy concept seems too isolationist to me.
Obviously, most of you have not researched the wisdom of our founding fathers and the need not to meddle in foreign affairs or entangling alliances (i.e. Israel). I am a fervent Paul supporter and can rebut any issue you may have with Paul with common sense answers. Do some research on the issues that concern you most. BTW we wouldn’t have all these terror threats if our own government weren’t funding them. And if the roles we reversed, would you want foreigners marching down your street? I think not. Every other candidate will only continue this war on a made up boogie man and continue the failed policies of Bush and Obama.
I eagerly await a common sense response to my concerns that Dr. Paul’s shrugging off of the threat that a nuclear-armed Iran poses to national security.
So far as I can tell, it amounts to Hope and Change!
Dear Eric,
Look, as an American who feels that all Americans are 100% responsible for the problems we face today as a Nation. Why do I feel that way?
Well after countless thousands of hours peeling the onion back to find the root core of what is wrong with our nation, what I have found is we the people have aided in the electing of countless criminals to both levels of congress as well the POTUS.
Why?
Due 99% in part to the American publics total IGNORANCE and that most would rather watch a football game or go on holiday or be self serving idiots, yes I was one of them until I really “WOKE UP.”
Now that I am awake, I see only one person who has stood strong and never bent to the demands of the NWO — and yes they dam well do exist.
That single person who is running for POTUS is, Dr. Ron Paul, and we as Americans FIRST and Formost must act as a unit to aid Dr. Paul to gain the office of POTUS.
There simply is no other choice, the only rights we have left or perhaps better said -somewhat intact within the Bill of Rights are the, 1st of what has been damaged badly, and the 2nd again is under attack and has been damaged badly.
Let’s be real Eric a RINO is of NO VALUE as they are a Progressive in sheep skins, they are no differant than Harry Reid or Barry Oboma who are both the most destructive CON artist’s to hold office in the last 100 years and GWB is not far behind.
Dr. Paul is not a RINO nor a Progressive, and to be quite frank 90% of all Rebublicans are not only uninformed, they are down right Ignorant of whats going on in this nation. Thats not saying that the same number is on the other side of the coin as well.
Be all that as it may, when the populace is give propaganda 24 / 7 ~ 365 days a year by way of the AP year after year , again the AP is owned by one of the NWO wealthiest familys as a matter of fact they own nearly 60% of all the world wealth.
So what level of TRUTH will anyone ever get from the Main Stream mdeia? The answer is quite simple, they will never get the truth if they rely on the media only.
Again there is clearly only ONE single person who is running for POTUS that will gain my vote as well as anyone who DARE explore the TRUTH, thats Dr. Ron Paul.
As a vote for any of the others to include Rick Perry who’s been Bilderburg blessed is a Vote for the same thing we now have one Barry Obama, Mitt is no differant nor is Backmann, nor any of them. They all take money from Special interest groups.
And thats where the problems we have come from, SIG,
We are not the worlds Police, we are not bound to aid anyone in the world, and lets be real we are “BROKE” from both of these absurd behavior patterns.
Lets heal our nation and restore all of our Civil Libertys, then we can talk about other nations and perhap aiding them.
Lets be real Eric, if we loose our Freedoms who will come to our aid?
Can you name anyone? You know you can’t as there is no one.
Thanks its TIME for real Change, – change that people will not even believe when they have it, its called getting our nation back and removing all the unfair laws that our criminal Congress and POTUS have forced on us.
VOTE Dr, Ron Paul for POTUS 2012 its your last chance to save your nation!
Ron Paul a Progressive? Please. He’s very libertarian, especially considering he’s a Republican. Go read up on libertarian and progressive ideologies and you’ll see that they are almost polar opposites. Along the lines of what someone said in a previous comment, if we keep nominating and electing these squishy, middle-of-the-road Republicans who pander and spend just as much as the Dems, we will continue our downward spiral.
Paul’s military and foreign policy principles are basically live and let live and only go out and kick a** if you have to. It’s not a policy of dismantling the entire military and becoming the world’s patsy. Really, that’s what we’re doing now – we just talk big. We have no business interfering in – or dumping obscene amounts of money into – foreign governments. Paul’s recognition of that doesn’t make him a Progressive.
James Pollock, are you saying that foreign wars and military aid are the goals of the Tea Party? It sure sounds like it. Last I heard, the Tea Party was for small government and fiscal sanity – NOT promoting war. Maybe you joined a different kind of party.
I’m not sure why a couple of people are already starting in with that “split the vote” type nonsense. We’re talking the Republican party here. It will have one nominee, when all is said and done. Nobody who votes or even leans Republican will vote for Obama now, and even the independents who helped put him into office in ’08 aren’t happy with him. Ron Paul would likely get 99% of the Republican vote, 99% of the Libertarian vote and a large chunk of the unhappy independents. I can tell you now that if the GOP nominates another squishy candidate, libertarians – myself included – will not vote for him/her. Whine all you want about us “splitting the vote” and helping Obama, but at the end of the day that will be on the GOP for nominating another crappy candidate. Libertarians are tired of the mess the two big parties have made, and most of us are tired of playing along with the lesser of two evils ruse.
FTR, I am not a Ron Paul supporter per se, though I could live with him far better than every other announced candidate save for Gov. Gary Johnson.
Ron Paul has brought important issues that threaten our country out of the dark corners of politics and into the public eye, Keynesian Economics, The Federal Reserve, letting free enterprise balance our economy, smaller government, states rights, on and on. Congressman Paul takes these issues so far that they too would raise threat to our country.
From all I have gathered, Congressman Paul is a good, strong, family man. I admire him for staying the course. He has headed us into a better direction.
I FEAR
1. He has gained a strong following of fellow extreme people, some who are ruthless and not to be trusted. These followers are already sling mud, unfounded sleazy mud. I hope Congressman Paul will put a stop to it. I think of him as being better than that.
2. He has grown the Libertarian Party, using the Republican Party. He is not a Republican and I think he should just state that and be more honest. Not talking about his voting record, but, his political principles.
3. He will drop out of the Republican race and run as an Independent, throwing enough votes away from the Republican candidate to give Obama 4 more years.
I am conflicted about this man. The Congress needs him as a rudder. The country does NOT need him as President, nor do they need another four years of what we have.
If we could put Ron Paul in Rick Perry’s body, we might have a winner. The presidency is now a beauty contest. even my 7 year old grandson said “I voted for the man with brown hair”.
Ron Paul’s Hardcore Supporters
“a core group of Ron Paul supporters leave their messaging style to down right ridicule and insults.â€
So you are basing your non-support for a candidate based on the actions of the supporters towards you? You just discredited this reader in your “educated†political op-eds. I’m short on time and prefer facts not emotion.
THE REASON Paul supporters are OBNOXIOUS is the MEDIA BLACKOUT. This is Communism at its finest to censor the vital information voters are entitled to and the candidates are entitled to. The MSM and so many hijacked citizen-activist organizations REFUSE to report the news without extreme coloring or pushing an agenda. God gave me a brain and I try to enjoy my inherent right to use it – daily. Just report the news and let me decide what’s best for me. I want facts and figures, please.
Ron Paul’s Opinion of the Middle East
“..where will we draw the line on foreign wars and affairs? I do recall a Federal responsibility to protect our foreign borders against invasion, but we spend far more time, money and energy protecting borders of other nations over our own.â€
Now you’re thinking about the rule of law, and the Golden Rule. Good job! Your actions are affecting my family’s future.
Border Security & Illegal Immigration
The ONLY way to stop the illegal sponges that are breaking the backs of Americans is to STOP the entitlements! That’s what they are here for. Government charity is nothing but theft – no different than a homeless person stealing my purse. Entitlements do nothing more than ENABLE the lazy, and we’ve got 3 – 5 generations of them, thanks to the New Deal (FD Roosevelt’s communist dream-come-true). Women have no reason to marry. They are subsidized to produce children out-of-wedlock and men are not held responsible for their sexual irresponsibility.
The REAL foreign terrorist that wants to enter America is not prevented from doing so by building a fence, placing 500,000 troops on the border, allowing TSA to force Americans into the harmful Backscatter X-ray machines OR sexually molesting old ladies (these techniques are only operational during certain hours. I’m sure the terrorists are smart enough to figure this system out), or the newest technology DHS has come up with – Future Attributer Screening Technology (FAST) program, which detects your thoughts through a series of tests. I am outraged that so many brain-dead Americans are complacent and think this is making them safer! This is pure communism – Papers Please!
Here’s an alternative plan – copy Sweden’s policy. Fire 90% of the TSA, train every able bodied American and issue them a firearm (better known as a militia) and allow all Americans to “carryâ€. We could look at firing a lot of the law enforcement too. They usually arrive at the scene AFTER the crime has been committed, and our local PDs are draining the municipal budgets. I’m talking about Americans taking their Rights and Responsibilities BACK from the government.
I respect Ron Paul as someone who embraces the founding principles of this country and has a long record to validate what he says is what he means. I think he made a tactical mistake with the assertion that “Iran is not a threat” when he could have said that Israel can take care of itself. My biggest question about Ron Paul is his commitment to defend Americans in danger. A more practical concern is that voters are ignorant and he seems unable to educate the general electorate in terms they can understand. I find some Ron Paul supporters to be over the top with a cult like commitment to the individual rather than the principles he represents. I also am annoyed when his supporters claim there is no difference between a Bachmann and a Romney. I would put candidates in two groups – GOP establishment with loyalty to the party and challengers to the establishment with loyalty to principles. I have no use for GOP establishment types like Romney and Gingrich. I see potential in challengers like Paul, Bachmann, and Cain. I wish supporters of Paul, Bachmann, and Cain would keep their eye on principles and not throw mud on each other.
Eric, you scum!
Ha, ha, just kidding. I couldn’t resist. Thanks for the insightful article!
One of the problems I have with Ron Paul is that his extreme non-interventionist policy would have us abandoning what had been until Obama our close alliance with and protective stand by Israel and I believe very strongly that we MUST continue to remain steadfast in our defense of Israel, which is why I back the candidacy of Rick Perry for President in 2012 instead.
If the Republican establishment will give Ron Paul a fair showing at their political arena’s he will win and replace Obama in 2012! I am with Ron Paul!
Since Ron backed away from the illegal immigration issue, I have no confidence in him. He looks way to tired to make it through a campaign and he’s too soft spoken to be POTUS. I REALLY hope Allen West throws his hat into the ring. He has what this country needs, he’s fed up with Obama AND he’s black so we wouldn’t be accused of being racist for voting Obama out.
Ron Paul Walks Sofetly And Carries A Big Stick and gets the job done because he does nto care about getting re-elected as much as he cares about this country.
I’ve been a Ron Paul supporter for about 10 years, and I am thrilled that he is doing so well in the polls this year. I think that Ron may be the last chance we have to get out from under the huge burden of supporting the federal government. He is one of the few politicians who has not been paid for by big business interests. Many of his plans seem extreme, but we need extreme changes to put the people back in control of this country. There are many in the GOP, the media, and big business who are afraid of Ron because they cannot control him. The media and GOP are trying to ignore or discredit him. As his popularity grows , I expect to see more and bigger efforts to hurt his campaign. Those of us who have seen this going on for years do tend to be defensive of him. If the media in this country is truly free and unbiased then why all the effort to ignore a candidate who is clearly becoming a favorite of the people?
Thanks for your article Ron Paul : Taking A Second Look !
I love Ron Paul, and agree with most of his ideas, and Libertarian views. Like Paul, I also believe we, as a country need to mind our own business, bring our troops home, and stop these senseless trillion-dollar wars, decrease the size of government, and stop the intrusion of government in our personal lives.
I’m sorry to say, because Ron Paul is not the typical ‘establishment’ dem/republican politican, I, like so many others, have eliminated him from my ‘wish list’ as possible winner for the presidential nomination 2012 .
WHY ? simply because I did not think Dr. Paul had a chance of winning.
Your article has opened my eyes. I hope we will all take a second look at Ron Paul. ……billie
The 2012 election will be the most important election of the history of this great country.
We are at a crossroad which will determinee the future direction of this country.
It will take some very drastic changes in policy to turn this country around and there is not anyone in Wshington that has what it takes to do the job. They won’t step out of their confort zones in fear of not being re-elected.
Why is Ron Paul so appealing to me?
The Dr’s out of the box ideas are the medicine this country needs. I won’t go into details of each of his stances but, he DOES have the right solutions to a lot of our countries problems.
What worries me most is the fact that the GOP and MSM are marginalizng Ron Paul and may force him to run as an Independent. If, that happens, then Obama has a much better chane of being re-elected. And, I truely believe that he will jump to the independent ticket if he does not get the nomination. His supporters will demand it.
And, I truely feel that Ron Paul is the only one who could beat Obama due to the indepedent vote which is now jumping from Obama to Ron Paul indroves.
This is going to be an election to remember. The establishment vs the people.
people are basing opinions of Ron Paul on sound bites…his philosophy has to be heard. others also need to recognize that he wants to have discourse to come to decisions, and that he will listen to genuine perspectives, but not more biased radical continuation of the status quo.
he also is aware that things don’t and can’t be expected to change overnight, but the process toward change has got to begin with action on on new ideas and not a continuation of proven to not work ideas
I agree with so many of the comments made by all, and am delighted to see that there is no name calling going on and just good discourse regarding the thoughtful “research” approach to making a decision. During the Republican debate, I felt so disappointed by Ron Paul’s response to the question about Iran’s nuclear program. I agree with the above comment that RP made a tactical error in responding saying that he thought that Iran was not a threat (my heart dropped) when I think he would have been better off saying that Israel could most likely defend itself just fine as a larger nation with a larger military presence. It gave the impression that he was being too naive about the danger of Iran’s plan to build nuclear weapons. We need to support our long-term ally, Israel verbally, and also, if and when military back-up is needed by Israel to be there to intervene; however, that decision can be broached when and if necessary. I think if RP were asked about this, he would reply in similar fashion, and would like to see approach taken. I have researched Dr. Paul’s many positions and believe that, at this time, with all the debt our nation is burdened with, that he has some good solutions that would get our country back on track to being a solvent nation and even in one, four-year term he could accomplish just that. Being soft spoken and gentile is not necessarily a “weakness” as some see it as long as RP displays the strength to firmly stand by his beliefs. He has always done that in the past, so there’s no need to doubt that would change in the future. When he believes in something he is like a tiger in protecting his position without resorting to name calling or demeaning others views. This shows strong character and leadership abilities. I find hope in his gentle, yet strong leadership skills. I trust that far more than many words with no action to back those words. We desperately need sound thinking and a person of integrity to return our nation to the greatness it once claimed.
Behind every great POTUS, there must be a Senate and House that has the same traits. Many of our elected officials appear to have become to money (salary) oriented instead of being focused on what is good for our country. I believe we need some changes in this regard to. Our representatives should not be tempted by the promise of wealth by being able to vote themselves a raise while the rest of the nation is seeing their salaries decreasing through inflation. OOps, becoming a little too “wordy” myself. I appreciate being able to share my thoughts.
I like this article and the honesty Mr Odom displayed in admitting that it’s OK to take another look when in doubt, and to change your mind if you think you might have been wrong in the first analysis!
Ron Paul is the only candidate who wont become the establishment we are trying to remove.
In answer to the questions you posed:
1. Ron Paul does indeed have a clique of followers who are /not/ doing him any favors. They will /not/ win friends, nor influence people (at least not the way they say they’d like), by saying that “Nine-eleven was an inside job.” And that is exactly what many of them /do/ say. “Impossible! A rag-tag bunch of ragheads bringing down seven buildings? The United States government blew those buildings up, and they, not UBL, had those planes hijacked!” All that is an excuse for the problems that /do/ give me pause in Ron Paul’s position.
But that’s not what Ron Paul himself says. I have parsed his comments very carefully.
Bottom line: I try to distinguish between the man and his supporters. Now on to:
2. The Ron Paul position on threats abroad appears to be: “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” He seems never to have read the Koran. “Fight and slay the infidels…” It couldn’t be any clearer. If I were in the Senate, I’d move heaven and earth to get a Senate Select Committee on Religious Ideals and their Consequences, and hold hearings on the Koran and the Bible, with testimony on a few scholars who could testify on Augustine of Hippo’s just-war theory, the Koranic Abrogation Principle, the whole eighteen cubits.
But when Ron Paul says that Israel should be left ALONE to deal with Iran, he REALLY means to leave them FREE to deal with Iran. And you have to remember something else: they’ve made some big natural-gas discoveries recently, and are on-track to discover OIL on lands well WEST of the 1949 Armistice Line. The United States can best serve Israel by making abundantly clear to anyone who will listen that the Sixth Fleet will, at need (and maybe for a fee to cover the cost), help the IDF Navy chase any and all would-be pirates away from the Israeli off-shore natural-gas wells. With all that wealth, they can wean themselves off their dependency on US foreign aid.
And as for military aid: I would repeal the Neutrality Act, or at least amend it further to allow the USA to sign a treaty allowing US citizens to sign up with the IDF as foreign volunteers. The IDF has that tradition; it goes back to the War for Independence. Maybe they ought to revive it. The French have their Foreign Legion. Let the Israelis have, permanently, their Volunteers from Outside the Land.
3. Immigration: NumbersUSA is not happy with a Ron Paul policy that would allow employers to go ahead and hire workers who are not lawful residents. I maintain that displaced American workers have, or ought to have, standing to sue such employers. I’ll settle for a law to that very effect. And then: if you catch someone hiring illegal aliens, sue ‘em.
That said: Paul can solve the problem that his issue would raise, by revoking all gun regulations and letting Americans arm themselves. I would go further: I would sign an EO specifically requesting the aid of any and all able-bodied and well-enough-armed civilians in patrolling the border. That would allow groups like the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps to do more than spot and report. They would then have the power to make CITIZENS’ ARRESTS. A private citizen can do that for a misdemeanor offense ONLY if the government requests it.
Hence my vote: He might persuade me, if he agrees to the conditions I have set forth above. And as for his “Truther” supporters, I guess the rest of us have to try to assure them that the truth is a bit more complex than they want to admit. The government has lost their trust. Fine. Can’t blame them for that. But I can’t hold with those who seem to think that Americans ought to take that kind of nonsense from anyone, no matter how he dresses his head.
Dr. Paul has the “extreme” distinction of being the only congressman who has been 100% consistent in his voting. That consistency is directly rooted in a strict constructionist interpretation of the Constitution. While I too have reservations about his foreign policy stance, his ethics and honesty far outweigh those concerns. He is an intelligent man and I seriously doubt he would abandon Israel or other close historical allies such as the UK. He has repeatedly made clear his intent to build a strong national defense, which is hardly what is happening now or at any time since the end of WW2. Wasting national treasure and driving the horrendous debt higher by engaging in dubious foreign military adventures and subsequent attempts at “nation building” has proven to not be in the best interest of the nation.
NumbersUSA, a well respected group that makes a stand against illegal immigration, grades the presidential hopefuls and gives Ron Paul an F. Ron Paul has a voting record concerning illegal immigration that can be used for his grade evaluation.
LATINOS FOR HONEST GOVERNME
August 21st, 2011.
Fellow tea Party Members, The elite of the establishment of the political machine do not want Ron Paul to be our next President. The Republican party and the liberal news media that are controlled by the Globalist, free traders that control the IMF and the US Federal Reserve Bank, will do any thing to make sure that Congressman Ron Paul is out of the presidential race. The Republican Party will not nominate Congressman Ron Paul, they know that Obama will not be re-elected, and they will expend millions, to make sure that Rick Perry or any of the other candidates be elect to continue their agenda. The collapse of the economic system of the United States and the creation of chaos in Mexico is their plan to form the NAU. In 2008 they play the same game and work, they expended millions and they place in office Barack Obama, Fellow Tea party Members We are dealing with experts that are part of this culture of corruption in our country. they work hard to learn what the majority of Americans are concern about; the job of their chosen candidate is to promise the people of this country, that they will fix the problems and the issues the people are concern about, Millions are expended to convince the people that their man is the one that should be elect to office. That was the case with Obama and they will do it again in 2012.
Fellow Tea party Members, If Ron Paul was unelectable, why the mainstream media work so hard to make sure that Ron Paul message is not hear by the American People, why they are so afraid of Ron Paul and the Tea Party.
We are not stupid, what we witnessed in 2008 was the most rampant and blatant manipulation of the primary election results in 2008, when the establishment and the majors newspapers endorsed John MacCain, On this elections they are doing it again, the media is refusing to announce Ron Paul’s near win in the Iowa Straw poll, they promoted Rick Perry, that only got few write in votes. It is clear that the corrupt news media and the elite that control our country wants another puppet in the white house, they know that Obama will be gone in 2012.
Fellow Tea party Members, do not let this corrupt establishment silence us and void our voices support Ron Paul. Be part of the Revolution to take our country back, we need Ron Paul in the White House in 2012.
The establishment is afraid of Ron Paul, because he believe in what American should be, in our Constitution, Our sovereignty, the Rule of laws and our American values. Ron Paul will eliminate, the Washington culture of corruption and stand for our Constitution and our laws.
Work and Vote For Ron Paul. be part of our History. We will be known as the makers of the New America. Honesty, integrity, patriotism and loyalty.
We will not be silenced by this corrupt establishment.
I found your opinion interesting. Let me just say that you should never allow anyone persuade you in your thought whether it be because they are pro or con no matter how negative or positive their thoughts might be of a candidate. I think your making the correct choice when disregarding the Paul Fans.
I regards to Ron Pauls position on ALL foreign policy. This is nothing of his own doing. His train of thought comes from a deep understanding of our constitution and what the strict intentions were in it’s pages. As well, what was in the minds of the founders when they wrote this document and the Federalist papers. Not failing to mention that you can be sure Ron Paul has read every letter and correspondence any of the founders ever wrote to each other and their wives. He, as they did, understand the method in which men could be free to chose and chose to be free.
If you study the founders you will find that they believed in a strong military. Not to run around the world to protect us, but to protect us at our very shores. The founders expected us to protect ourselves not to nation build. They expected us to spread the word of freedom and liberty through example, not through the means of manipulation. As we see in many things that are wrong with our government, the power of persuasion and indoctrination in which the government has instilled in us, have set us on a mindset that tells us we must be all over the world to protect ourselves. Some will try to argue that ” the world has changed”. I say yes it has. But I also agree with the founders in that the world will change but the hearts and minds, their human nature never will.
President George Washington himself said during his last address to the nation “Commerce with all, Allegiance to none.” They/he knew that if you showed favor to one that you would make another your enemy. Of course this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t help thy neighbor. I don’t think the founders thought that way nor Ron Paul. But how about bringing the idea that was instilled in our heads as kids. Mind your own business and your own business will be mindful of you.
Our history of not minding our own business goes back to at least WW1 and WW2. We went in to rid people of tyrants so that they might remain free. They begged us for the help. Our mistake was staying in order to nation build. We’ve been making that mistake ever since. We spend more time in war than out of it.
I’m glad you did your research on his immigration and border stance. I’ll bet that you found that he believes we have laws on the books that deal with the issue and that the problem is that they haven’t been being enforced. If you enforce the law, it makes life a little harder to get here and to remain here illegally. If staying here is hard, they won’t stay here at all. If that part works they won’t come here illegally as they do.
The constitution is easy, you just have to know what’s in it and what its intentions are. I say “are” rather than “was”. Remember, its not the world that changes it’s the attitude of the people. That’s why the founders wrote it down for us. It’s so that we wouldn’t lose our way and stray off the course. But they knew that even if we did, we would still have the guidelines written down for us like a map through time to regain our course. I think you might have re-read the map and found the path to take.
I myself four years ago didn’t know what to make of Ron Paul. Now I’m looked upon as some as a Ron Paul nut or fan. Well all I have to say is that, If I’m a Right Wing Nut Conservative, then so be it. I have no more room for negotiations for the other side. Negotiations got us into this mess. No way negotiations are going to get us out. There really hasn’t been any true negotiations, they just get us to think there has been. I say the buck stops here. With you, I and everyone else that tiook the time to read this. We have a choice. Do or die as a nation. But if we don’t get it right this time. I don’t think there will be a next time. At least not with out a lot of blood shed unfortunately. Something none of should or want to think about. The hour has struck on 12. 2012. Do we do it now? Or is it the 12th of never?
Just a few more things before I go. This he was talking about is us, you and I, all of us.
Let us raise a standard to which the Wise and the Honest can repair.
— George Washington, Constitutional Convention, 1787
This is what I mentioned earlier in regards to mans attitudes changing but not their selfish habits.
“In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” –Thomas Jefferson
And, if ever it should look to get ugly, everyone should think of this.
“A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high virtues of a good citizen, but it is not the highest.
The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation.”
~Thomas Jefferson
My interpretation of this is that there might come a day when we must set aside the Constitution temporarily in order to save it. We can reset it, but the left have constructed mechanics of law in our government that aren’t law at all. This makes it almost virtually impossible to recover. If they should decide they aren’t giving up their unduly acquired powers, we will have decisions to make.
This makes me think of the Washington’s Cruisers flag.
“An Appeal To Heaven”
Ron Paul says that out currency will fail. He is absolutely one hundred percent correct on that. When will it happen? That is up in the air but it will happen.
There is only one thing that gets us into wars and that is the petrodollar. Nixon through Kishinger started it. They cut a deal with the Saudi Royal family to where they would only except our currency for oil and then they would turn around and buy our debt, while we ran the printing presses until we burned out the bearings, if in turn we would use our military to protect their oil fields. Why do you think we went into Iraq? It was because the French and EU had talked Sadam to except euro dollars for oil. Weapons of mass destruction my rear end. This was excellent for the politicians because they love to spend and that they have done. Who would think that Ron Paul does not know this? I am just an average Joe and I know it.
The petrodollar has put the death seal on our currency.
Vietnam Vet
By the way, Ron Paul is our only hope. I am 66 years old and I know this beyond a doubt. We need serious chance in this country and there is no one out there right now that is willing to make the serious changes except Ron Paul. People we best not let this one get by us because if we do then it is all over.
Fiscally Conservative/Socially liberal. That is how many Libertarians/Ron Paul supporters have explained their positions. The fiscal part is not the problem. Safe to say most of us agree with the fact our govt is out of control, needs to be reined in, and Ron Paul has fantastic ideas in that area. That said, he should be Fed chairman, or Fiscal Czar (!).
It’s the everything else/social part that is the problem/BIG problem. What we have now is social liberals. Same social agenda as Liberalism (traditional definition–), except for who pays. ie drug use is acceptable; now govt pays for needles & rehab, in Paul world, users would finance their own. Individuals/Govts of the world can do what they want; Obama and Paul agree with Iran’s Nuc policy. Now ‘diversity’ is code word, Paul world; ‘personal freedom’ code word = all behaviors, no matter how contrary to custom, habits, traditions, beliefs, principles of America must be tolerated and accepted.
If complete liberalism sounds so fantastic, read John Stuart Mill. It has been considered before and rejected– by our founding fathers..
Conservatives working within the Republican party are making a difference, and will begin to turn this boat around. It will take a little time. This is only the second election that grassroots TeaParty has been awake and paying attention. There is no need to go all Paul Radical to prove a point.
